The phrase “less is more” so often applies to weddings. I’ve seen many couples choose a low-profile ceremony over something extravagant, allowing them to save costs, planning, and effort, and host a tailored celebration that is still unforgettable. Choosing a modest ceremony doesn’t mean settling for less. Actually, an Ottawa City Hall wedding gives you more flexibility, choice, and variation as you envision your special day.
If you and your loved one are set on an intimate wedding at Ottawa City Hall, I’m here to guide you through the process, to make it as perfect and well-planned as can be — not forgetting inside tips to guarantee stunning photos to capture memories of the day.
Let’s start with the practicalities. To be eligible for a civil wedding in Ottawa, you have to be over 16 years old. Anyone between 16 and 17 will require parental consent. There are certain reasons to make marriage ineligible, although they’re quite extreme, such as being previously married, or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Let’s be safe to assume none of these apply to you!
The room allows for 10 people, which includes the officiant, the couple, two witnesses (legally required), and up to five guests. It lasts around 20 minutes. You’ll need an ID and a valid marriage license, and the ceremony will cost between $160 and $230, depending on the time of the week. For full information, visit the Ottawa City Hall’s official website.
Both partners must apply together at Ottawa City Hall and provide valid identification, such as passports or birth certificates. If any documents are in a language other than English or French, they may need translation and an accompanying affidavit. The cost to get married in Ottawa is $182.00 for the license, and it’ll be valid for three months from the date of approval, so give yourself plenty of time before the ceremony.
Practicalities aside, you may have some questions about getting married in Ottawa City Hall.
The ceremony itself is much simpler, faster, and cheaper than a traditional option, and is becoming increasingly popular, especially for an Ottawa City Hall elopement. Even though the ceremony is quick, overall, it’s much less stressful and more intimate. If you’ve not visited the city hall before, you may be surprised how beautiful the building is — it’s surrounded by art and sculptures and has a classy museum vibe which makes for a scenic backdrop.
That being said, the big advantage is freedom of the day away from the ceremony itself. You may want to plan dinner and portrait sessions for after the ceremony, host an event space to take your guests, or invite people who weren’t able to make the ceremony to party the night away! Walking around the area is a nice addition, too, especially along the Rideau River.
When it comes to the post-ceremony celebration, that depends on what you want for your special day. Ottawa is spoiled for choice with event spaces, for various group sizes. Some of my favorites are listed below, with more information on my comprehensive guide to getting married in Ottawa.
Naturally, you’ll want photos of your special day. I know some couples worry that, with a city hall Ottawa marriage, they may not get the photos they want. I’m here to reassure you that’s not the case. As an Ottawa City Hall wedding photographer, I can guide you through the best options, not only in the venue itself, but also the surrounding area.
You have plenty of options along the canal, which is particularly striking during summer. You can also head to Fairmont & Major’s Hill Park, or, if you don’t mind a short drive, make it to Ornamental Gardens to make your backdrop a vibrant splash of natural color. The event spaces for evening celebrations are all visually appealing, too.
Plus, with a non-intrusive photography style, you won’t compromise on authenticity or intimacy as you move through the day. Check out more info on my Elopement/Micro-Wedding photography offerings here – Elopement Photography
